Awet Tesfaiesus has been a member of the Green party since 2009 and served in the Green parliamentary group in the Kassel city parliament since 2016. After the racist attack in the town of Hanau in 2020, she decided to run for the Bundestag and, in 2021, made history by becoming the first Black woman to be elected to the German parliament. In this position, she is committed to fighting discrimination and advocating for equal opportunities. Awet was born in Eritrea and studied law at the University of Heidelberg. She has been working as an attorney since 2006 and is a partner at a law firm in Kassel.
